city of Halicarnassus, today known as Bodrum. It was commissioned by <strong>Artemisia II<\/strong> in memory of her husband and brother, Mausolus, who ruled the Carian region under the Persian Empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mausolus was a powerful satrap (governor) who expanded and strengthened Halicarnassus. After his death, Artemisia ordered the construction of an extraordinary tomb that would reflect his power and prestige.
